2019 Sri Lanka Visit

2019’s trip to Sri Lanka occurred from August through to October. During this time, I met some truly inspiring teachers who have the learning of the children in their classes foremost in their routine. The teachers at most of the schools we visit lack resources so whatever they use is donated by us each year or sourced from their family members. Sometimes they even purchase items themselves from their meagre salaries to do the best they can for the children.

It’s so important for us, In My Heart Serendib Foundation to continue doing our work in Sri Lanka.

Many of the children are living extremely impoverished lives and their parents can’t afford to buy the most basic of needs for their education.

We are fortunate that here in Australia we have an abundance of avenues of help and support, in Sri Lanka there is nothing. If you can’t afford it, you don’t have it.

Each year now for 12 years I’ve been making the journey to the schools we support to gift to each child a school bag filled with exercise books, colouring pencils, grey lead pencils, basically all the things that every child needs at school. Our collections are never ending. No sooner is a shipment on the high seas than we start the collections all over again.

It’s a most worthwhile cause that brings joy to more then 400 children and their families.

I’ve been told first hand just how important our donations are to these children so we must continue our work. It’s through the generosity of those who donate items to us and to those who volunteer at our op shop and to those who donate and shop at our op shop that we can continue our work.

We aren’t funded by governments here in Australia, we can’t hold sausage sizzles to raise funds at big hardware chains as we primarily support children overseas with education, we don’t get donations from big office/stationery chains as again our work is primarily supporting children overseas.

All I can say is Thank You to those who do understand our purpose and don’t have a problem in supporting us so that our work continues.
